Dr.Mark Jaccard, Professor, SFU Resource and Environmental Management, Co-author Hot Air

Mark has been professor in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, since 1986 – interrupted from 1992-97 while he served as Chair and CEO of  the British Columbia Utilities Commission. His PhD is from the Energy Economics and Policy Institute at the University of Grenoble. Internationally, Mark is known for his work since the 1990s on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, currently a lead author on the Special Report on Renewables), the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (currently co-chair of task force for sustainable coal use), and the Global Energy Assessment (convening lead author for sustainable energy policy). He is a member of Canada’s National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy and a research fellow at the CD Howe Institute. He has over 90 academic publications. His 2005 book, Sustainable Fossil Fuels, won the Donner Prize for best policy book in Canada. He was named the British Columbia Academic of the Year in 2008.

Guy Dauncey , President, British Columbia Sustainable Energy Association

Guy Dauncey is a speaker, author, and organizer who works to develop a positive vision of a sustainable future, and to translate that vision into action.

He is President of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, and author of the award-winning books Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change; Cancer: 101 Solutions to a Preventable Epidemic, and other titles. His new book – The Climate Challenge: 101 Solutions to Global Warming will be published in November 2009.

He is also Executive Director of The Solutions Project; and Publisher of EcoNews, a monthly newsletter that promotes the vision of a sustainable Vancouver Island. His home page is www.earthfuture.com

Matt Horne, BC Energy Solutions Program Director, Pembina Institute

Matt Horne has been with the Pembina Institute since 2003 and is currently the Director of the BC Energy Solutions program. His work supports policy change that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in BC and provide replicable models for the rest of Canada. In pursuing this goal, he has experience working on initiatives with the province, municipalities, and First Nations. Prior to joining Pembina, Matt worked extensively with energy-economy models on projects attempting to estimate the costs and benefits of climate change policy in Canada. Matt holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Dalhousie University and a Master of Resource and Environmental Management from Simon Fraser University.

Karen Graham, Senior Policy Analyst, Business Council of BC

As Senior Policy Analyst with the Business Council of British Columbia, Karen is responsible for a range of related policy areas including environment/climate change, energy, infrastructure and transportation, all with a provincial focus. She also tracks regional (Greater Vancouver) economic, environmental and business issues. She recently held the role of project manager for the Business Council’s Corporate Responsibility Summit in October 2008 that featured former US President Bill Clinton as keynote speaker. Previous policy research areas included immigration as a source of skilled labour and foreign credential recognition.

Prior to joining the Business Council Karen worked in market research and the BC wine industry. She holds a Master of Public Policy degree from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, and a Master of Arts (Political Science/International Relations) degree from York University in Toronto.

Dave Crosby, President, Construction, Maintenance & Allied Workers Union Local 2020

CMAW Local 2020 is the results of a merger of four former small Carpenters' Local Unions covering Vancouver Island, Powell River and the Sunshine Coast. Dave served as Municipal Councillor with the District of Campbell River over a period from 1987 through to 1997 and was Councillor responsible for community planning and development.

 

Ian Gill, President, Ecotrust Canada

Ian Gill is president of Ecotrust Canada (Vancouver, B.C.) and a director of Ecotrust (Portland, Ore.), related non-profit organizations that promote the emergence of a conservation economy in the coastal temperate rainforests of North America.

Prior to founding Ecotrust Canada in November 1994, Ian was a writer-broadcaster with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In his seven years as a television reporter with the CBC, Ian specialized in land-use, environment and resource issues. His television documentaries won numerous local and international awards. Ian also spent seven years as a senior reporter and editor with the Vancouver Sun. He is a fellow of Journalistes en Europe (1986-87).

Ian is a director of Vancity Community Credit Union, the Boat Basin Foundation and the Na na kila Institute, and is a member of the Forestry Advisory Council at the University of B.C.

He is the author of the best-selling Hiking on the Edge: Canada's West Coast Trail, and Haida Gwaii: Journeys Through the Queen Charlotte Islands. Ian lives in Vancouver with his wife Jennifer and their three children, Jasper, Fergus, and Lucy.
